Daisy Dreadful (“we”, “our”, “the site”) is a dark tourism directory. We take your privacy seriously. This policy explains what data we collect when you use the site, how we use it, and your rights.

1. Location Detection

Daisy Dreadful uses your device’s geolocation(via the browser’s navigator.geolocation API) for three features:

• “Near You Tonight”— flies the map to your current location so you can discover nearby dreadful places.
• Night Mode— uses your latitude and longitude to calculate local sunrise and sunset times, automatically switching the UI to a darker, more atmospheric theme after dark.
• Distance display— shows how far a location is from your current position.

We do not store, transmit, or share your precise location.Your coordinates are processed entirely on your device — they are never sent to our server, logged, or shared with third parties. You can revoke location permission at any time through your browser settings. If you decline location access, the site falls back to a default UK location for night-mode calculations and disables the “Near You” button.

2. Local Storage

We use your browser’s localStorage for personalisation. The following data is stored on your device and never transmitted to us:

• Last viewed locations— tracks which location pins you have clicked, so previously visited places appear “ghosted” on the map.
• Night mode preference— remembers whether you have manually toggled night mode or if it was set automatically, so your choice persists between visits.
• Night mode calculated location— a cached copy of your approximate latitude/longitude used solely for sunrise/sunset calculations on subsequent page loads.

You can clear this data at any time via your browser’s “Clear site data” or “Clear local storage” settings.

3. Mapbox & Third-Party Services

The map on this site is powered by Mapbox GL JS. When you view the map, your browser communicates with Mapbox servers to load map tiles, terrain data, and styles. This involves sharing your IP address and basic device information with Mapbox. Their use of this data is governed by the Mapbox Privacy Policy.

Map data © OpenStreetMap contributors. OpenStreetMap data is licensed under the ODbL.

We do not send your location coordinates to Mapbox. The “fly to” animation uses coordinates you supply via geolocation (with your permission) solely to reposition the map view.

4. Cookies & Analytics

This site uses Google Analytics to collect anonymised usage data such as page views, session duration, and referral sources. This helps us understand how visitors interact with the site so we can improve it. Google Analytics sets first-party cookies on your device and transfers data to Google servers in accordance with the Google Privacy Policy.

We do not collect, sell, or share your personal data for advertising or profiling purposes. You can opt out of Google Analytics by installing the Google Analytics opt-out browser add-on.

5. Children’s Privacy

Daisy Dreadful is a dark tourism directory featuring content about eerie, haunted, and macabre locations. This site is not intended for children and we do not knowingly collect any personal information from anyone under the age of 16. If you are a parent or guardian and believe your child has provided us with personal data, please contact us so we can take appropriate steps to remove that information.

6. Data Retention

All personal data remains on your device in localStorage. We do not operate a user-account system, so we have no access to your identity, email address, or browsing history. The only server-side data stored is the public location database (names, coordinates, backstories, and media links for each dark tourism site).

7. Your Rights

Since we do not collect or store your personal data on our servers, most rights under UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018 are handled through your browser:

• Right to erasure— clear your browser’s localStorage or use the “Clear site data” option.
• Right to restrict processing— deny geolocation permission in your browser settings.
• Right to object— stop using the site at any time.
